Cultic Deer

Archaeologists in Bashkortostan excavated an Early Nomad burial belonging to a Sarmatian chieftain (4th-2nd centuries BC). The cemetery, located between Orenburg and Pokrovka, was the first very rich chieftian burial excavated in the lower Ural Mountain steppes. This deer, carved from wood and covered with gold foil,was one of 28 similar cultic deer sent with the deceased to the next world
