2005 FIELDWORK OPPORTUNITIES

GOLDEN HILLS KHAZAR FORTRESS

ARRIVAL IN ROSTOV-NA DONU

We’ll meet every participant in the airport or at the railway station. If a participant arrives before the beginning of the session, he/she will be met and escorted to the hotel. The participant will be responsible for personal expenses (hotel, food, and transportation) during this time. If participants arrive at the beginning of the session, all expenses will be covered.

LATE ARRIVAL

If a participant arrives after the beginning of the session, he/she will have problems with registration (see right) and transportation to the site. Thus, we recommend that everyone arrive in Rostov-on-Don not later than on the first day of the session (from from 0 o’clock until mid-day). You must advise the time of arrival and your means of travel (air/train). It is best to send this info via email as soon as possible to jkimball@csen.org. If a participant arrives late in Rostov-on-Don, telephone 516707 (another number may be provided later). These people will order a taxi and give the driver instructions on how to get to the site. The participant will be responsible for the taxi fare.

WHAT TO BRING

It may be hot and sunny in the daytime. The excavatiaons are located in the open, so we recommend hats and shirts with long sleeves for working. It is rather dusty (and after rain – muddy) at the site, so bring closed shoes as well as sandals. Nights may be very cool and you will need sweater, sweatshirts and a jacket. The camp will not electricity so you will need a flashlight. There is a cold shower in the camp, and we’ll go to the bathhouse once a week, but we shall also go to the river by bus every day (not obligatory), so bring a swimsuit. Bring a sleeping and an air mattress as cots are not provided but the floor is covered. There will be two people in a tent. The tents are rated for three people, so they are spacious enough.

Tableware is provided. We shall have three meals a day besides a small snack in the field. It’s not necessary to take food, but if you want to buy something edible, there is a shop in the village that we’ll visit every two or three days. (The ice cream is excellent.) There is no laundry but we’ll have some basins and laundry powder in the camp, but there will be no hot water. We can find some woman in the village who may do laundry but as there are not good washing machines in the village, we cannot guarantee results.
