Here we have begun digging the Central Pit area of the mound. In the foreground are the rocks of Level 6 that were brought from a river beyond the mountain that can be seen in the background, left. Test Pit 1 (right) had been excavated to a depth of ca 2.0 meters when we encountered permafrost. Each day the ice along the edges of the test pit thawed leaving a large pond of water. After reaching the 2 meter mark, we did not dig further in Test Pit 1, but rather placed our efforts on the central mound pit.
