REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum age, 20
  • No experience required
  • Training will be provided by both American and Mongolian archaeologists

It is important that Participants are able to withstand challenging field conditions, a moderate workload (especially hiking), living in tents under semi-desert conditions, and a meat oriented diet

Participants should also have a good sense of humor and be able to cope with a country where Murphy's Law reigns supreme.

We emphasized that this project is in a fairly remote part of Mongolia and participants will be living in very simple conditions

WHAT TO BRING

It may be very hot and sunny in the daytime. Survey and excavations are in the open , so we recommend hats and shirts with long sleeves for working. It is rather dusty (or after rain – muddy). We recommend closed shoes or boots for walking and sandals for relaxing. Nights can be quite cool so bring a sweater, sweatshirts and a jacket. The camp, has no electricity so you will need a flashlight. You must bring a tent, your sleeping ba,g and an air mattress (f you desired).

  • July 6 - August 24, 2003

SESSIONS

  • First Session: July 6 - 27, 2003
  • Second Session: August 3 -24, 2003

VISAS

  • Western world participants will be under the auspices of CSEN
  • The organization will facilitate obtaining visas for all participants
  • Because of the time needed to process invitations in Ulaanbaatar and to obtain visas from the Mongolian Embassy in Washington DC, deadline for applications must be strictly adhered to.

TAX DEDUCTIBLE CONTRIBUTION

  • Each Session - $1200
  • Contributions are tax deductible
  • There is a limited number of participant positions open for each 2003 session.

CONTRIBUTION INCLUDES

  • All expenses at the site
  • 1-2 nights of lodging in an expedition rental in Ulaanbaatar
  • Transport to and from the site by either local bus or minivan
  • Some assistance in making alternative arrangements in Mongolia is available through the project organizers

Contribution due dates

  • 1st Session: $300 due with application no later than April 15, 2003
  • 2nd Session: $300 due with application no later than May 1, 2003

Final payment due dates

  • First Session: $900 due by June 1, 2003
  • Second Session: $900 due by June 15, 2003


Note: The essential official visa for the excavation requires approximately six weeks to obtain. A visa will not be granted until the entire contribution is paid. For this reason, it is important that final payment be made in a timely manner.

If you plan on staying in Mongolia longer than your excavastion session, you must include this information on your application so that the extra time can be included in your Visa.

Not Included

  • Airfare
  • Any expenses in Ulaanbaatar beyond lodging
  • Personal insurance is not included but is recommended

REGISTRATION

Visitors planning to stay in Mongolia for more than 30 days are required to register with the police at the Citizens’ Information and Registration Center. The Project Organizers will assist in registering the participants.
