FIELDWORK OPPORTUNITIES 2001

SUMMER ARCHAEOLOGY IN SOUTHERN RUSSIA AT THE

CHASTIYE KURGANS

GENERAL INFORMATION

We are in search of a group of volunteers who will assist in the excavations of Chastiye Kurgany, an archaeological site composed of about thirty kurgans (burial mounds) located between the Seversky Donets River (a tributary of the Don River) and the Bystraya River. This will be the second year of excavations at Chastiye Kurgany. During the 2000 season, excavations of the first mound revealed a burial of a rare type dated to the 5th-4th centuries B.C. Among the artifacts from this burial were a bronze cauldron, a brazier, various arrowheads, and pottery. Horse harness accoutrements in typical Scythian "Animal Art" style included cast-bronze heads and other images of fantastic animals. However, it is not clear if the people buried at this site were Scythians or Sauromatians. But further archaeological investigations at the site will reveal more details that wil help solve disputed issues concerning the ethnicity of the peoples who inhabited the Don region in 5th and 4th centuries B.C.

The work is carried out by archaeologists from of Rostov State University, headed by Professor V.Ye.Maksimenko, and in collaboration with the Don Expedition, led Professor V.I. Guliayev of the Institute of Archaeology, Russian Academy of Science.
